Dominic Aidan Stiofàn Diarmuid Ò Ceallaigh (Kelly)
Born: October 31, 2040
Current Age: 27
Position: Tracy family nurse, medic for International RescueThroughout his life, Dominic has been subjected to travel and change, whether or not he has been willing. He was born into hard times in Dublin City, Ireland, as his father, an up-and-coming American businessman named Matthew Hawkins, left his mother, Roisin Ò Ceallaigh (Kelly), while she was pregnant. He travelled back to Kansas, USA, leaving Roisin to raise the child alone. Unfortunately, Roisin was less than thrilled to be a mother.
Some of Dominic’s earliest memories are of putting his mother, drunk and drugged, to bed at night. Roisin had incredible trouble trying to adapt to her life as a carer. Her plan had been to take her work as a languages teacher overseas, but now with a child and little money, she found her dreams shattered. Instead of making the best of things, she became a chain-smoking alcoholic, and found it difficult to hold down a teaching job. She spent years travelling around Ireland. Each time she got a job, she would lose it. Dominic started working illegally at thirteen, taking various jobs to supplement their meager income and his mother’s rapidly dwindling savings.
When he turned sixteen they moved to Belfast in Northern Ireland, and Dominic began working two jobs, as well as trying to study for his exams. His ambition was to become a doctor, but between working and picking his mother up from bar floors and street corners, there was little time for studying, and he failed to achieve the grades. Instead he attended Queen’s University Belfast where he achieved a BSc in Nursing Science. In the mean-time, his mother stopped working altogether, and her health started to decline.
Dominic relished the job he got at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, and specialised in surgical nursing. Unfortunately, as things began to look up, his mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, and Dominic once more became her carer. Almost one year later, his mother killed herself, rather than further succumbing to her illness. As he lost one parent, however, his estranged father contacted him after learning of his mother’s death. Dominic, confused, angry, and hurt, accepted his father’s offer to visit him in Kansas, rather than remain in Belfast with his memories.
The father and son did not have the joyous reunion that Matthew had wanted. Instead, Dominic was cold and indifferent to the man he refused to call ‘dad’, though eventually thawed towards him. In Kansas, Dominic found a close friend in his youngest half-brother, Thomas Hawkins. He seized the opportunity for change, and immigrated to the USA, taking a job in Tracy Aerospace Medical Base, Kansas, and also volunteering with LifeFlight, a search and rescue organisation, with whom Dominic earned his pilot’s licence.
Life was better for the first seven months. Dominic enjoyed his job, and even fell in love with a young intern at the hospital named Margaret ’Mags’ Houston. She fell pregnant unexpectedly, and fearing her parents’ wrath at a baby born out of wedlock, she demanded that Dominic marry her, and that they pretend they were a whirlwind romance, and had planned the baby. Dominic, smitten, did exactly as she asked. Unfortunately, Margaret had realized the folly of her plans, and left six months into the marriage, filing for divorce. On December 15, 2065, Joshua Aaron Ò Ceallaigh (Kelly) was born, and was immediately handed over to the care of his father. Margaret never saw her child again.
Despite the further hurt, Dominic became devoted to his young son. Two years later, his father forwarded a job description to him for a family nurse for Jeff Tracy, one of Matthew’s business associates. Dominic applied and was successful, becoming not only the family nurse, but also a medic for International Rescue.
