Public enemy number one, illegitimate half-brother to the gentle Kyrano, this evil genius is the sworn enemy of International Rescue. He is first and foremost a specialist in industrial espionage, stealing prototypes, plans, and other proprietary technology. He is a mercenary, for hire to anyone who can pay his price, and will resort to kidnapping, blackmail, sabotage, hijacking and torture if it will get him what he wants. A master of disguise, he uses a variety of custom-made masks and authentic costumes to hide his identity. It is this propensity for disguise that has earned him the pseudonym of the Hood.

He is also a master of the black arts, and his immersion in voodoo and black magic has given him strange powers over the minds of men. From his hidden - and well protected - Malaysian temple base, he is able to reach out telepathically and touch the mind of his half-brother, torturing Kyrano on a psychic level and forcing him to give forth the secrets of his employer. Anyone unfortunate enough to encounter him quickly falls under the spell of his glowing eyes, passing out as they are rendered helpless by his mesmerizing powers. It was those powers that forced his father, a wealthy plantation owner, to disinherit and disown Kyrano, sending the older, legitimate son away to struggle while Gaat, the younger son, became heir to the estate. However, Kyrano has recently schooled himself to resist his half-brother's attacks; it is now difficult for Gaat to gain access to his brother's mind. Kyrano also wears an alarm pendant with which he can call for help should he feel his half-brother's psychic invasion.

His illegal activities have made Belah Gaat a wealthy man; besides his temple base, he owns a personal helijet, a mini-sub, and a variety of trucks and other utilitarian vehicles. But he is greedy and he knows that obtaining the plans to the fabulous Thunderbirds would gain him wealth beyond measure. So International Rescue has become his favorite target, and his constant defeats at the hands of its operatives has instilled in him a deep hatred for the organization, its operatives, and all that it stands for.
