In what year is this story set?
The story is set in 2068, three years after the debut of International Rescue. The events of Thunderbirds Are Go happened in 2066, while Thunderbird Six happened in 2067.

What happened to Jeff's wife?
Depends on who you ask. Marriott specifically states that she died giving birth to Alan, while Bentley says she died both early and tragically. The comics, in “The Complete Thunderbirds Story” says that both she and Jeff's father, Grant, died in an avalanche when the boys were nearly adults.
For our RP, we have Lucille dying the year after Alan's birth in a multi-car pile up on a bridge from Staten Island to New York City. The weather was bad; the roads were slick, and she was on her way to pick up Jeff. His father, Grant, died of a heart attack a few years previously.

Why did Jeff adopt Dianne's kids?
So he wouldn't hear any, “You can't tell me what to do; you're not my dad!” from them. But mostly to make them one family, to secure their financial future, and to forstall any custody battles should he or Dianne die while the kids are still minors. Dianne didn't reciprocate because Jeff's boys are adults and didn't need for her to do so. They call her "Mom" out of respect and to reinforce the idea of "one family" to the younger kids.
